The Quartet in London

After they graduated in 1942, Murdoch and Foot lived together in a sparsely furnished flat in Westminster. Along with Midgley, all three women did war work in London: Midgley in the Ministry of Production; Foot in Chatham House and Murdoch in the Treasury.

As well the drama of a dramatic love quadrangle – that gave Iris an idea for ‘a good psychological novel’ – Philippa and Iris’s first engagement with French existentialist philosophy took place in London. And Mary re-discovered her first love – Plato.
