Iris Murdoch

I'd heard of Iris Murdoch as a novelist when I began working in the Archive, but in these last 10 years or so I've come to know much more about Murdoch as a person, though I'm not sure if she can ever be truly or fully known!

The Iris Murdoch Collections show so many sides to her character and one of the most enjoyable aspects of working in the Archive is seeing the new and different ways that visitors respond to them. I see the Archive's role as being there to facilitate research, promote the Collections and to be a place where people can freely enjoy engaging with original material; the things that Murdoch wrote, touched, and owned, which is an experience that can be exciting, overwhelming and sometimes emotional too.

What strikes me most about Murdoch though is the way in which she has brought together such a large and far-reaching community of scholars and enthusiasts whose interests are about as eclectic as Murdoch's archive! I'm amazed at how welcoming and collaborative the Murdoch community is and even as someone less familiar with her writing I'm glad to be a part of it.
